Briana de Tomás (she/her) is a Spanish-American visual artist, filmmaker, and anthropologist based in Madrid. Working at the intersection of video, photography, and ethnography, her practice explores themes of urban space, community, movement, and cultural heritage.
Grounded in a background in Visual Arts (BA, University of Central Florida) and an MS in Cultural Anthropology with a specialization in Visual Ethnography (Leiden University), Briana uses her camera as both a tool for observation and storytelling. Her work often unfolds in public space, focusing on how people claim, move through, and shape the urban landscape.
Her recent film, Street Rats: An Ethnography on Rollerblading and Skill Acquisition, follows the Careen rollerblading crew in NYC and investigates themes of place-making, resistance, and the DIY ethos. Drawing from documentary practices and critical theory, Briana’s work blends cinematic imagery with ethnographic intimacy.
Currently, she is expanding her approach to include more experimental visual storytelling, merging fieldwork, archival material, and personal narrative to investigate how movement and memory intersect in contemporary urban life.
Let's work together!
